Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Praxis…
What is the Praxis?
Praxis Series tests are a part of teaching licensure in approximately forty states. Each state uses the tests and scores in different ways, so be sure to check the certification requirements in your state by going to www.ets.org/praxis/states. There, you will find information detailing the role of the Praxis tests in determining teaching certification in your state, what scores are required, and how to transfer Praxis scores from one state to another.
What is on the Praxis?
The content in this guide will prepare you for the Praxis English Language Arts: Content Knowledge and Analysis (5039) exam. This multiple-choice test assesses whether you possess the knowledge and skills necessary to become a secondary school English language arts teacher using both a multiple-choice section and a written section that includes two constructed-response essay questions. Both constructed-response questions will ask you to evaluate the central idea of a work.
The first constructed-response question will have you analyze a work of prose or poetry and discuss literary elements, while the second question will require an investigation of a literary essay’s rhetorical features and argument construction. You have a maximum of three hours to complete the entire test. Thirty minutes is allotted for the constructed-response questions, while 150 minutes is allotted for the multiple-choice questions. The test always has a total of 130 multiple-choice questions; however, the number of questions specific to each subject is approximate. There are always two constructed-response questions, which always test on the Reading and Writing, Speaking, and Listening categories, respectively.
You will answer approximately forty-eight multiple-choice questions and one constructed response question (40 percent of the test) related to reading. The reading section focuses on two types of reading sources: literature and informational texts. The former will require knowledge of major works and authors from around the world as well as historical movements in literature. Questions will explore literary genres and their major forms; literary elements, poetic devices and their contributions to a text; and reading and research strategies. The latter requires an understanding of how authors develop a written argument through textual evidence, diction, structure, appeals, and other rhetorical strategies.
You will answer approximately thirty-three multiple-choice questions (19 percent of the test) related to language use and vocabulary. Generally, this section will assess your ability to follow the conventions of standard American English, including grammar, mechanics, and syntax. You should also be able to use various techniques, such as context clues and syntactical knowledge, to determine the meaning of words. Be aware of how various references, such as the dictionary, thesaurus, or encyclopedia, promote language use. Questions will also explore teaching strategies that reinforce vocabulary and language development and how those strategies can be implemented in a classroom.
You will answer approximately forty-nine multiple-choice questions and one constructed response question (41 percent of the test) related to writing, speaking, and listening. The test will cover the different types of writing, their distinctions and purposes. You should understand the characteristics of effective writing, research, speech delivery, and oral communication. Be aware of strategies for instructing students in effective communication, conducting research appropriately, and integrating the components of coherent writing into their work.
How is the Praxis exam scored?
The multiple-choice questions are equally weighted. The 130 multiple-choice questions consist of seventy-five percent of your overall score, while the two constructed-response essays comprise the other twenty-five percent. The preceding tables offer a breakdown of the concepts covered in the multiple-choice sections of the test. Keep in mind that some multiple-choice questions are experimental questions for the purpose of the Praxis test writers and will not count toward your overall score. However, since those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question. There is no penalty for guessing on Praxis tests, so be sure to eliminate answer choices and answer every question. If you still do not know the answer, guess; you may get it right!
Your score report will be available two to three weeks after the test date and will stay on your Praxis account for one year, but you can also opt for a paper report. The score report includes your score and the passing score for the states you identified as score recipients.
How is the Praxis administered?
The Praxis Series tests are available at testing centers across the nation. To find a testing center near you, go to the ETS website. At this site, you can create a Praxis account, check testing dates, register for a test, or find instructions for registering via mail or phone. The Praxis ELA exam is administered as a computerized test. The Praxis website allows you to take a practice test to acclimate yourself to the computerized format.
On the day of your test, be sure to bring your admission ticket (which is provided when you register) and photo ID. The testing facility will provide pencils and erasers and an area outside of the testing room to store your personal belongings. You are allowed no personal effects in the testing area. Cell phones and other electronic, photographic, recording, or listening devices are not permitted in the testing center at all, and bringing those items may be cause for dismissal, forfeiture of your testing fees, and cancellation of your scores. For details on what is and is not permitted at your testing center, refer to the testing center’s website.
