Some Frequently Asked Questions about the WEST-E…
What is the WEST-E?
The WEST-E: Social Studies (028) exam is a part of teaching licensure in Washington State. WEST-E scores are used to complete a state application for teacher certification. The social studies exam ensures that the examinee has the skills and knowledge necessary to become an educator of social studies in Washington State public schools.
The social studies tests are interdisciplinary; they test your ability to understand relationships among fields in social studies. These include civics, economics, geography, United States, and world history, and social studies concepts and skills. You’ll integrate your knowledge of all of these subjects in order to answer the questions correctly.
What is on the WEST-E?
You will answer approximately eighteen questions (16 percent of the test) on civics, approximately thirteen questions (12 percent of the test) on economics, approximately eighteen questions (16 percent of the test) on geography, approximately twenty-two questions (20 percent of the test) on United States history, approximately twenty-two questions (20 percent of the test) on world history, and approximately eighteen questions (16 percent of the test) on social studies concepts and skills. Questions will determine your ability to use resources to interpret and analyze social studies information and to think critically about data. A foundation in the presentation and communication of social studies information is essential. You will also be expected to correctly use social studies terminology and understand the foundation and impact of social studies as a discipline.
How is the WEST-E scored?
On the WEST-E, the number of correctly answered questions is used to create your scaled score. Scores are scaled to a number in the range 100 – 300, a passing score being 240. The score shows your performance on the test as a whole and is scaled to allow comparison across various versions of the tests. There is no penalty for guessing on the WEST-E, so be sure to eliminate answer choices and answer every question. If you still do not know the answer, guess; you may get it right! Keep in mind that some multiple-choice questions are experimental questions for the purpose of the WEST-E test makers and will not count toward your overall score. However, since those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question.
How is the WEST-E administered?
The WEST-E is a computer-administered test. The WEST-E website allows you to take practice tests to acclimate yourself to the computerized format. The WEST-E is available at testing centers across the nation. To find a testing center near you, go to the testing center’s website.
