Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Praxis…
What is the praxis core?
The Praxis Core Tests are used by teacher preparation programs in many states to measure applicants’ aptitude in mathematics, reading, and writing. They are generally all required and may be referred to as the Praxis Series. You may take the tests individually on separate dates, or you may take them all on the same date by registering for the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators: Combined Test. In addition to its use as a determinant for entry into teaching programs, the Praxis Series is also used by many states to determine whether individuals receive teaching licenses. While there are other Praxis tests for specific academic subjects you may also be required to take, these core subjects are essential for anyone entering the teaching profession. Some states, however, require their own, independently created exam in lieu of the Praxis Series. It is important to check the specific requirements of your state to ensure you take the right exams.

How is the praxis core scored?
Each multiple-choice question is worth one raw point. The total number of questions you answer correctly is added up to obtain your raw score. Essay responses are scored on a holistic scale of 1 – 6 by two separate graders who are unaware of each other’s evaluations of your work. Their scores are added together for a total of 2 – 12; if they differ substantially, to ensure fairness a third scorer determines your final essay score. This number is added to your raw score, which is then scaled to result in your final score.
Upon completion of the test, you will immediately receive an unofficial score report. Before receiving the report, however, you have the option to cancel your scores. You will receive your official score report 10 – 16 days after taking the exam.
Keep in mind that a small number of multiple-choice questions are experimental and will not count toward your overall score. ETS uses these to test out new questions for future exams. However, as those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question. There is no penalty for guessing on the test, so be sure to eliminate answer choices and answer every question.
How is the praxis core administered?
The Praxis is a computer-based test offered continuously at a range of universities and testing centers. It may be taken in its individual parts or all at once. Check the ETS website for more information. You will need to print your registration ticket from your online account and bring it, along with your identification, to the testing site on test day. No pens, pencils, erasers, or calculators are allowed; on the Mathematics portion of the exam, a calculator will automatically appear on the computer screen for certain questions. You may take the test once every 21 days.
