Some Frequently Asked Questions about the PAPA…
What is the PAPA?
The PAPA is used by teacher preparation programs in Pennsylvania to measure applicants’ aptitude in mathematics, reading, and writing. You may take the modules individually on separate dates, or you may take them all on the same date. While you may also be required to take other Pennsylvania Education Certification Tests for specific academic subjects, these core subjects are essential for anyone entering the teaching profession.
What is on the PAPA?
The PAPA gauges college-level skills in mathematics, reading and, writing in accordance with the Common Core State Standards. Each module—Mathematics, Reading, and Writing—is broken down into diff erent categories based on the skills needed to succeed in a teacher preparation program.
On the Reading test, you will read and answer questions about fiction and nonfiction passages of varying length. Some will be paired. They may be taken from any reading material an educated adult is likely to encounter, including novels, newspapers, magazines, articles on current events, and visual representations. The Mathematics test focuses on numbers, algebra and functions, geometry, problem solving and mathematical communication, and statistics and probability. The Writing test tests your ability to analyze purpose, production and types of text, and your language and research skills. You will complete two sentence correction assignments, write one essay, and answer multiple-choice questions.
How is the PAPA scored?
Each selected-response (or multiple-choice) question is worth one raw point. The total number of questions you answer correctly is added up to obtain your raw score. Essay responses are scored holistically by two separate graders who are unaware of each other’s evaluations of your work. If they differ substantially, to ensure fairness a third scorer determines your final essay score. This number is added to your raw score, which is then converted to a scale of 100 – 300. In order to pass the PAPA, you must receive at least a score of 220 on Reading, 193 on Mathematics, and 220 on Writing. Alternatively, you can opt for composite scoring. In this case, you would need to receive a total of 657, including at least one minimum qualifying score.
Keep in mind that a small number of selected-response questions are experimental and will not count toward your overall score. PECT uses these to test out new questions for future exams. However, as those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question. There is no penalty for guessing on the test, so be sure to eliminate answer choices and answer every question. If you still do not know the answer, guess; you may get it right!
How is the PAPA administered?
The PAPA is a computer-based test offered continuously at a range of universities and testing centers. It may be taken in its individual parts or all at once. Check the Pearson Vue website for more information. You will need to print your registration ticket from your online account and bring it, along with your identification, to the testing site on test day. No pens, pencils, erasers, or calculators are allowed; on the Mathematics portion of the exam, a calculator will automatically appear on the computer screen for certain questions. You may take the test once every 21 days.
