Some Frequently Asked Questions about the OPTE…

What is the OPTE?

The OPTE PK – 8 is a part of teaching licensure in Oklahoma. In conjunction with completion of the General Education Test (OGET) and a Subject Area Test (OSAT), the OPTE scores are used to complete a state application for teacher certification. The OPTE ensures that the examinee has the skills and knowledge necessary to become an educator in Oklahoma public schools.

What is on the OPTE?

The content in this guide will prepare you for the OPTE PK – 8. Using both multiple-choice questions and writing assignments, this test assesses whether you possess the knowledge and skills necessary to become an elementary teacher. The following list offers an approximation of how many questions you will encounter in each concept area. You have a maximum of four hours to complete the entire test.

  • Learners and Learning

    • 26 multiple-choice

    • 1 constructed-response

  • Instructional Practice

    • 30 multiples-choice

    • 1 constructed-response

  • The Professional Environment

    • 19 multiple-choice

    • 1 constructed-response

  • TOTAL: 75 multiple-choice, 3 constructed-response

You should expect to write 150 – 300 words for each written assignment. There will be three prompts, one for each concept (shown in the table below). Your total word count for all three responses may not exceed 1,000. Be sure to respond to the entire assignment and answer each prompt.

How is the OPTE scored?

On the OPTE, the number of correctly answered questions is used to create a score. Scores are scaled to a number in the range of 100 – 300, with a minimum passing score of 240. The score shows your performance on the test as a whole and is scaled to allow comparison across various versions of the test. The seventy-five multiple-choice questions are equally weighted and account for 70 percent of your overall score. The three written assignments are worth 10 percent each, comprising the remaining 30 percent. Keep in mind that some multiple-choice questions are experimental questions for the purpose of the OPTE writers and will not count toward your overall score. However, since those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question. There is no penalty for guessing on the OPTE, so be sure to eliminate incorrect answer choices and answer every question.

The constructed-response section is scored based on how well you meet the following four performance characteristics: purpose, appropriate application of professional knowledge, accurate and effective application of professional knowledge, and elaboration of professional knowledge. The score report will include constructed-response diagnostic indicators only if you do not pass the overall test.

Scores are released three to seven weeks after the testing date. Your score report will be available to you on your CEOE (Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators) account for two years. Although scaled, your score will be reported simply as “Pass” (240 or above) or “Did not pass” (below 240). Scores are automatically submitted to the Office of Educational Quality and Accountability.

How is the OPTE administered?

The OPTE is administered year-round at testing centers located throughout Oklahoma and across the nation. To register for a test and find a testing site near you, check the CEOE website. At this site, you can create a CEOE account, check testing appointment times, and take a tutorial about computerized testing.

On the day of your test, arrive thirty minutes before your appointment time, and be sure to bring proof of registration and a valid photo ID. You are allowed no personal effects in the testing area. Cell phones and other electronic, photographic, recording, or listening devices are not permitted in the testing center at all, and bringing those items may be cause for dismissal, forfeiture of your testing fees, and cancellation of your scores. For details on what to expect on testing day, refer to the CEOE website.
