What is the NMTA?
The NMTA Early Childhood assessment is a part of teaching licensure in New Mexico. NMTA scores are used to complete a state application for teacher certification. The early childhood exam ensures that the examinee has the skills and knowledge necessary to become an educator in New Mexico public schools.
What is on the NMTA?
You will answer approximately twenty-one multiple-choice and one restricted-response question (28 percent of the test) on Child Development and Learning, approximately thirty-three multiple-choice and two restricted-response questions (44 percent of the test) on Instruction, Assessment, and the Learning Environment, and approximately twenty-one multiple-choice and one restricted-response question (28 percent of the test) on the Professional Environment.
How is the NMTA scored?
The multiple-choice questions are equally weighted. The seventy-five multiple-choice questions account for 80 percent of your overall score. The three restricted-response essays are worth 10 percent and the extended-response essay comprises the remaining 10 percent. The preceding table offers a breakdown of the concepts covered in the multiple-choice sections of the test. Keep in mind that some multiple-choice questions are experimental questions for the purpose of the NMTA test writers and will not count toward your overall score. However, since those questions are not indicated on the test, you must respond to every question. There is no penalty for guessing on NMTA tests, so be sure to eliminate incorrect answer choices and answer every question. If you still do not know the answer, guess; you may get it right!
On the constructed-response section, two graders assign a score of to each response. The responses are scored holistically with high scores being given to responses that show thorough understanding of the prompt by being accurate, effective, and complete. Restricted-response questions are graded on a scale of 1 – 3, and the extended response question is graded on a scale of 1 – 4. The scores of the three restricted-response essays are equally weighted to comprise 10 percent of your overall score, while the extended response alone comprises another 10 percent.
How is the NMTA administered?
The NMTA is a computer-administered test. The NMTA website allows you to take practice tests to acclimate yourself to the computerized format. The NMTA is available at testing centers across the nation and world. To find a testing center near you, go to the testing center’s website.
