Some Frequently Asked Questions about the GACE…
What is the GACE?
The GACE Chemistry test measures aptitude in chemistry for teacher candidates looking to certify as chemistry teachers in the state of Georgia. You may choose to take each subtest individually, or you may take them at the same time by registering for the Combined Test. You must pass both subtests in order to be credentialed in Chemistry. These tests do not replace the reading, writing, and mathematics assessments required for certification in Georgia.
What is on the GACE?
The MTEL tests on: your ability to plan, conduct, and interpret scientific experiments; your understanding of matter and energy; nomenclature, chemical composition, and bonding and structure; your competency in periodicity, chemical reactions, and stoichiometry; and your understanding of solubility and acids and bases.
How is the GACE scored?
Each multiple-choice question is worth one raw point. The total number of questions you answer correctly is added up to obtain your raw score, which is then converted to a scale of 100 – 300. In order to pass the GACE Chemistry assessment, you must receive a score between 220 and 249 to pass at the induction level and a score of at least 250 to pass at the professional level.
There will be some questions on the test that are not scored; however you will not know which ones these are. GACE uses these to test out new questions for future exams. There is no guess penalty on the GACE, so you should always guess if you do not know the answer to a question.
How is the GACE administered?
The GACE Chemistry assessment is a computer-based test offered during specific testing windows throughout the year at a range of universities and testing centers. It may be taken individually or with one or both of the other Science subtests. Check the test’s website for more information.
