Some Frequently Asked Questions about the CSET…
What is the CSET?
The CSET Mathematics test measures aptitude in mathematics for teacher candidates looking to certify as math teachers. This test must be taken in addition to the assessments in reading, writing, mathematics, and professional knowledge required in California. The CSET Mathematics test does not replace these other exams.
The test consists of three subtests (211, 212, and 213). You must pass all three subtests to be certified to teach mathematics.
What is on the CSET?
The CSET Mathematics test gauges college-level content knowledge in mathematics, as well as the necessary skills for mathematics. Candidates are expected to demonstrate thorough and extensive conceptual knowledge in subjects including number and quantity, concepts in algebra, geometry, and calculus. You will also be expected to demonstrate mastery of key skills related to probability and statistics. Each subtest focuses on one or two domains (for a total of five domains). Each domain is further subdivided into two to five objectives.
How is the CSET scored?
Each multiple-choice question is worth one raw point. The total number of questions you answer correctly is added up to obtain your raw score. Constructed responses are scored holistically by two separate graders who are unaware of each other’s evaluations of your work. If they differ substantially, to ensure fairness a third scorer determines your final essay score. This number is added to your raw score, which is then converted to a scale of 100–300. Constructed responses are scored on three criteria: purpose, subject matter knowledge, and support.
The multiple-choice section constitutes 70 percent of your score, and the constructed responses 30 percent. In order to pass each of the CSET Mathematics subtests, you must receive at least a score of 220. Remember, you must pass all three subtests to qualify for certification.
There will be some questions on the test that are not scored; however, you will not know which ones these are. CSET uses these to test out new questions for future exams.
How is the CSET administered?
The CSET Mathematics test is a computer-based test offered during specific testing windows throughout the year at a range of universities and testing centers. Each subtest must be taken in a separate individual test session. You may complete the subtests in the order of your choosing. Check the test’s website for more information.
